Advanced Yoics configuration

The Yoics NOW proxy is an advanced feature of the Yoics desktop. With NOW, you make any networked service or device on your network into a internet remote accessible and shareable device, all without needing complex router configuration OR needing to introduce security vulnerabilities to your network.

Getting started

NOTE: The Yoics NOW proxy is recommended for ADVANCED users only. Although we don’t expect any horrific consequences of trying it out, we recommend you know a bit about networking before trying it out.

To bring up the NOW Proxy configuration, select
>> Services
>>>Now Proxy…

Configuration menu

1. Proxy list. This is a list of all devices that are enabled by Yoics on the computer you are curently using. The list includes both Proxy devices and standard configured Yoics devices.
   • Alias: This list the name that you’ve given the device.
   • Type: Shows what type of device (folder, VNC, etc.)
   • Address: Shows the internal (local) IP address that this device is configured for.
   • Port: Shows what TCP port that the device is operating on.
   • State: Shows the current state of the device.
     • Enabled: Active and available
     • Disabled: Configured but turned off (not available)
     • Reserved: A pre-configured Yoics device (e.g. folder) which cannot be modified from the Yoics Now menu.
2. Delete: You can select any non-reserved device from the list and delete it here. This will only delete it from Yoics.
3. Change: This brings up the change dialog, allowing you to change the values for the local IP address and the Port. This is typically used if your router recycled and your local IP values were reset.
4. Preview: Selecting a devcie on the list and clicking the Preview button, will bring up the browser and show you what you’ll see if you remote view the device.
5. Common name: This is where you enter a name for a new proxy device that you would like to configure.
6. Service type: This is where you select what type of device you are configuring.
   • HTTP: Select this if you are configuring something with a web-interface, such as a router, for remote access.
   • HTTPS: This is for something with a standard web-interface, over a secure connection.
   • TCP: This is used for any generic TCP communication protocol.
   • TELNET: This is for a Telnet server.
   • Subversion: This is to allow configuration to a Subversion server.
   • VNC: This is a pre-configured setting for VNC servers.
   • Printer: This is used to make a network printer remote accessible via Yoics.
   • RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol): This is a pre-configured setting for Microsoft Remote Desktop access to a machine (requires XP Pro, Vista Business or above on the server end).
   • TVersity: This is a pre-configured setting for the popular TVersity Media Server.
7. Select this box if the service that you are making accessible via Yoics is running on the same computer as Yoics.
8. If the service is NOT running on the same computer, enter the local IP address of the service OR device that you are making accessible via Yoics. Note: Yoics NOW proxy only works with devices or services on the same network as the computer running Yoics. The sub-network address range will be automatically loaded here.
9. Enter the port of that the service that you are making available uses. For any pre-configured Yoics setting, this will be automatically entered for you.
10. Once you’ve made all the entries, select “ADD” to add it to your proxy list.
11. Clicking OK will register the device you just configured with yoics.com
12. Cancel if you changed your mind about setting something up.

Overview

The Yoics desktop looks and works a lot like an instant messenger application, except instead of a device list, you get a list of devices . These devices can be yours or ones that have been shared to you. With the Yoics desktop you can make any data, service or even device on your network accessible to you from anywhere on the Internet.

During initial setup, you’ll have the option to setup remote desktop, folder sharing, photo sharing and web-cam sharing. Yoics also provides custom configuration, so that advanced users can configure just about any data, service or device to be accessible and shareable remotely.

Yoics Web folders

Once you configure a folder with Yoics, it becomes instantly Internet accessible and shareable either via a web browser or a webDav folder.

Yoics Photos

File view is just one of the options that you have with Yoics Folders. If you have a folder with digital pictures, just configure it with Yoics Photos, and you instantly have a personal photo site, viewable and shareable across the internet.

Remote desktop

Sometimes accessing files or folders just isn’t enough, especially if you’re providing computer support for a less than savvy computer user that you know. Yoics now features pre-configured UltranVNC server, so remotely managing computers with your keyboard and mouse is as easy as a double-mouse click. Our software also support multiple versions of VNC,  and we’ve pre-configured the free version to work with Yoics, so you can access remote machines without requiring complex virtual private network (VPN) or router configuration. If you’ve got your own preferred remote desktop program, no worries, Yoics is easily configured to work with the application of your choice. RealVNC personal edition, TightVNC , UltraVNC, and even Microsoft Remote Desktop are already drop-down menu choices.

Yoics surveillance

Have a webcam? With Yoics, you can instantly transform it into your own personal surveillance system. Not only can you view it live from any browser, motion detected footage is stored on your hard disk, which you can browse at your leisure.  You can also have a daily summary created or even a daily time-lapse and if you have a YouTube account, all your video clips can be uploaded – automatically.  You can even have a Tweet automatically sent out everytime video is captured.

At Yoics we’re big fans of the iPhone, so as you might imagine, most of our stuff works great when viewed from its browser.

• Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2/SP3, Vista SP1
• Windows .NET Framework 2.0 (installed with Yoics if not already installed).
• 1GHz CPU
• 1GB memory
• 100MB HD space
• DSL or Cable High Speed networking at 384Kbps or higher
• Additional resources are required for systems sharing more than 5 active Yoics services.
• Systems sharing greater than 10 services will require premium computer systems and high speed network connections.

Yoics is the (almost) instant way to make just about anything you have connected to the Internet into your own personal web-site. Yoics Photos allows you to take any folder of pictures and make it viewable from any web-browser, even the one on your iPhone. Want to share them with friends? No problem, just like any web resource, Yoics photo folders are easy to share with any of your on-line friends.

Setup Wizard

The easiest way to configure your digital pictures for web access is through the setup wizard. The wizard will start the first time you run Yoics and is available anytime by going to >> Tools, Setup Wizard.

Just make sure the third option is selected, and the Wizard will automatically configure your computer for web photo viewing.

Yoics Manual Photo configuration

If you would like to select a particular folder for photo viewing (it can be a sub folder of My Pictures), you can easily do so through manual setup. Please go to the Manual Yoics Photo Folder configuration tutorial.

Accessing via the web

Go to yoics.com and login using your yoics credentials.

Once logged in:

1. On the left hand side is your device list, just look for the name of the Yoics Photo folder (default is My Pictures). Once you’ve located it, just click on it like you would any hyperlink.
2. Your Pictures will show up on the right hand side just as if they were on a Photo site, except in this case the Photo site is your very own computer.

iPhone Access

Accessing via the Desktop

Like all other Yoics devices, simply double-click on the device & a window with you Yoics Photo folder will be launched in a browser window.

WebDav access

In addition to viewing in browser mode, if you access via the Yoics desktop you can also choose to use our File Explorer mode, by right clicking on any Yoics folder and selecting the Open in File Explorer. The picture folder is opened up in the native operating system folder system allowing drag & drop access to/from the folder.

Sharing

All Yoics folders are shareable either through web viewing or webDav for full drag & drop access. Visit the Sharing tutorial to learn how. If you want to share access to your folder, simply right click any Yoics folder and select "Share with Friends" and simply add their email address or designated Yoics ID.

TVersity

TVersity is a great Media Server that is available for free download , that transforms any Windows computer into a full fledged media server and allows playback via just about any networked device. Learn more at TVersity.com

How it works

• Add your home and internet media to TVersity
• Organize it, tag it and create playlists
• Access it from your TV and mobile devices

Adding Yoics

When combined with Yoics, TVersity also becomes easily remote accessible, without requiring any complex network configuration (such as port forwarding on your router).

If you haven’t done so already, download and install Yoics for Windows .

Open Now Proxy configuration menu

Enter information

1. Give it a name (any name that you want)
   
2. Select TVersity, which will automatically configure Yoics for you.
3. Port 41952 (default) will be automatically selected. If you are using an alternative port, modify this port to that selection.
4. Select ADD
5. Select OK

Remote accessing

There are two ways to Internet access your TVersity Server, either using the Yoics desktop or by logging in to yoics.com. If you are using the desktop, just double click on the name of your TVersity server, and if you’ve logged in to yoics.com (via a browser on a computer or a handheld, like an iPhone) just simply click once, like you would with any hyperlink.

Once you’ve accessed TVersity server, you’ll see their familiar interface & you can operate that as usual.

Yawcam , Yet Another Web Cam, is a nice program that is available for free download . Using the Yoics NOW! proxy built into the desktop, you can configure it for remote Internet viewing, without the need to configure your router for port forwarding.

1. Give it a name, e.g. YawCam
2. Select HTTP, since you will be viewing YawCam via a browser.
3. Port 8081 is the default port for YawCam’s streaming data. If you configured YawCam to use a different port, enter that here.
4. Select "Add."
5. Select "OK."

To Internet access your web-cam, either load the Yoics desktop onto the remote machine & double click on YawCam, or login to yoics.com and do the same.

MyTunesRSS allows you to access the music and videos from your iTunes library or any simple watch folder over a local network or even the internet. You can access your music from all over the world using a simple web browser. The user interface lets you search for titles or browse your whole library by album, artist or genre. Internet access via Yoics

Yoics for Windows

Yoics is a powerful software tool that transforms your Windows computer into a Internet accessible powerhouse. With Yoics, you can make any folder on your machine into a personal web-site, your web cam into a surveillance solution and an even remote access your computer from any internet connected browser. To install Yoics, simply download the Yoics desktop for Windows. If you are using either Mozilla (Firefox) or Safari (Apple) you’ll be presented the option to save the Yoics installer to your hard disk. In these cases, just look for the Red Yoics Icon.

1. Run the installer

Start the process by clicking Run (or save the file & click on the RED Yoics icon to start the setup program).

2. Click Next.

Once Yoics has downloaded, give permission to launch the setup by clicking NEXT.

3. The Setup Wizard

Follow the steps in the Startup Wizard.  Along the way, you’ll be asked to accept our license agreement & where you would like to store Yoics.

4. Installation complete

That’s it, Yoics is installed, and will run once you hit Close.  When you first run Yoics the Startup Wizard will guide you through initial setup.  Learn about the Startup Wizard.

5. Launching Yoics

Look for the Yoics icon whenever you want to run the desktop.

1. Login screen

1. If you have a Yoics ID (it may be your email address) enter that here.
2. The password associated with your Yoics ID.
3. This will remove your credentials & clear the cookie, so they won’t be remembered on the machine.
4. Click here if you have forgotten your password & a temporary one will be emailed to you.
5. If you don’t have a Yoics ID, click here to bring up the registration page.
6. Click this box, if you want Yoics to remember your Yoics ID and password.
7. This will have Yoics run, whenever you startup the computer.
8. This will automatically log you in when Yoics starts.
9. If you check this box, any devices that you have setup on the machine will continue to be Internet accessible even if the Yoics desktop is not running.  E.g. your My Documents folder will still be remote accessible, even if the Yoics desktop is not running.  Note: if a different user starts up the Yoics desktop & logs in using different credential, your devices will stop being available.

2. Registration screen

Registering for a Yoics account is fairly straightforward and only take a couple minutes to setup.

3. Startup Wizard

For convenience, the first time Yoics starts it will automatically bring up the statup wizard.  The wizard configures the most popular devices for you automatically.

1. Free VNC.  Yoics comes pre-configured with the Free version of VNC.  By selecting this option, you’ll be able to remote desktop your computer from any Internet connected browser.  Note: the Free version of VNC does not support VISTA, so if that’s your operating system, this option will be greyed out.
2. My Documents.

• Free VNC.  VNC is a software program that allows you to use a remote keyboard and mouse to control your computer.  If you select this option, you will be able to access, control and share your computer desktop from any Internet connected browser.
• My Documents.  Yoics will transform your My Documents folder into your own private web-site of your documents.
• My Pictues.  Yoics can make your My Pictures folders into your own personal Photo Gallery, accessible and shareable from any Internet browser.
• WebCam.  Your web cam will not only be viewable from any Internet browser, but will instantly be made into a surveillance solution.  Access and view any motion detected footage from any browser.

Device list

Once your devices are setup, you’ll see then show up on your device list.  The device list is similar to a ‘buddy list’ for instant messaging, except these are all the things that you have available to you. Simply double click a device to connect to it.

BLUE icon are your devices, which are on-line and available.

GREEN icon are devices which are shared to you, which are on-line and available.

ORANGE icons are active devices, which are current connected with.

GREY devices are currently off-line and not available.

Web access

Once the Startup Wizard is complete, you’ll also be automatically be logged in to yoics.com.  The left side is the web device list, which works like the Desktop version.  Just click on your device to bring it up in the right hand side iFrame.

BLUE icon are your devices, which are on-line and available.

GREEN icon are devices which are shared to you, which are on-line and available.

BLACK TEXT indicates that the device uses an application that is not viewable via a web-browser & accordingly needs to be opened by the Desktop.

Accessing via your iPhone

Simply go to yoics.com and you’ll get a login screen specifically tailored for the iPhone.  Once logged in, you’ll see a device list.  Just click to access your devices.

BLACK TEXT indicates that the device uses an application that is not viewable via a web-browser & accordingly needs to be opened by the Desktop.

With remote desktop, you gain the abilty to remote maange your computer from any web browser.  In addition, you can share your desktop to easily give demonstrations or presentations, without the need to sign-up for an expensive paid for service.  Yoics comes pre-configured with the free version of Real VNC, one of the most popular remote desktop programs.  The only limitation with this program is that it does not work with Vista versions of Windows.  Yoics also supports the personal version of Real VNC, TighVNC and Microsoft Remote Desktop.  If you’re using Windows XP, the setup Wizard will automaticall setup your desktop for you.

Setup Wizard

The easiest way to configure Remote Desktop is through the setup wizard.  The wizard will start the first time you run Yoics and is available anytime by going to >> Tools, Setup Wizard.

Just make sure the first option is selected, and the Wizard will automatically configure your compute for remote desktop.

1. If you are running VISTA, this option will be greyed out.
2. The default name that Yoics will assign is “My Desktop,” if you setup multiple computers, beginning with the second one, Yoics will ask if you want to select a different name.

Accessing via the Desktop

Like all other Yoics devices, simply double-click on the device & a window with you remote desktop will be launched.

Accessing via the web

Go to yoics.com and login using your yoics credentials.

Once logged in:

1. Click on “My Desktop” just like you would any hyperlink.
2. The device window will give you status on the connection & will be updated with the VNC logo.
3. You’ll get a separate VNC connection window, simply select “OK” to complete the connection.

Remote desktop window

Whichever way you access, you’ll get a separate window which you can remote manage with your keyboard and mouse.  The mouse and keyboard reaction time performance will vary based on the connection speed of your computer & the remote computer.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a protocol that allows users to connect to a computer running Microsoft Terminal Services. The clients are widely available, and the service is available with Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, Windows Media Center, Windows XP Tablet PC, Windows Vista Ultimate, Enterprise and Business editions.  When used with Yoics, the computer is easily remote accessible without the need for complex network configuration.

Setting up Microsoft Remote Desktop

Microsoft Remote Desktop is only available Windows XP Pro, Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.  If you have on of these operating systems, check out the Microsoft site on how to set it up.

Setting up Yoics

To begin open the Yoics NOW configuration window, by going to >> Services >> Now Proxy.

Adding Microsoft Remote Desktop

1. Pick a name for this service that you’ll use to to access it from your device list.
2. Pick “Remote desktop service using Microsoft….” one of the Yoics pre-configured options.
3. Leave the box selected (presuming you’re working on the computer that you wish to access.  Yoics will auto-enter the default port number for you.
4. When everything is ready to go, select “Add.”
5. Click OK to register your new service with Yoics.

Remote accessing via the desktop

Run the Yoics desktop from any remote machine and double click on your MS RDP  name to bring up the login screen.

Login to Windows

Now just login using your Windows credentials, and it will be just like working on your other machines.

FAQ

Q: Can I access my remote desktop session via yoics.com?

A: Currently MS Remote desktop can only be accessed via the Yoics desktop.

Q: Can I share my desktop using MS RDP?

A: It’s possible to give someone else access to your desktop, but unlike VNC, there is no way to ‘broadcast’ your desktop session to others.
