Remote access & share your Drobo

Love your Drobo Share so much you hate to leave home without it?  Well with Yoics, never worry about that again.  With Yoics, you can access your Drobo from any web browser, even the one on your iPhone.  Wanna give it a try?  Download the beta version for free now.

Installation and registration

Once you’ve downloaded Yoics for Drobo, just copy it into the DroboApps share and reboot.  That’s it, Yoics is installed.  Once your Drobo has restarted, just login to yoics.com .  If you don’t already have a Yoics ID, you can create one there.  Once logged in, you’ll get a screen asking if you want to register your new device, just select “Complete registration.”

Once to the registration screen, just 1. give you Drobo a name (such as Drobo) and 2. Click register.  Congratulations, your Drobo is now remote accessible and shareable.

Remote access

From any internet connected computer there are two ways to access your Drobo, via yoics.com or the Yoics desktop application.  The desktop looks just like an instant messenger application, just click on the name of your Drobo and a browser window will open up.  (Once the device is active, the icon will turn orange.)

Ditto for the web inteface, just log into yoics.com and look for the list on the left. You can even access your Drobo from your iPhone.

Drobo access screen

Once you’ve selected your Drobo you’ll get the access page.  File view, gives the look and feel of a file manager.  Photo view, shows like a picture gallery.  And Configuration allows you to setup Yoics on your Drobo.

Share with friends

With Yoics, sharing your camera (or any Yoics device) is as easy as 1-2-3.

Just select the device that you want to share & click on the sharing icon. Enter in the Yoics ID (or email address) of the person that you want to share with (whoever you are sharing with needs to also be registered with Yoics), and click ADD. Once a device has been shared, it will show up on their device list – with a note that it’s shared to them from you.

If you have a falling out with that friend, no worries, just select them & remove them from your share. Needless to say, much easier than asking for a new IP address.

  1. Will this app work with Mac OS Leopard?

Can I upload files to the drobo over the internet?

    Thanks very much!

  2. Hi,

I did everything listed, and I am good up until I get to Remote Access. I can login to my Drobo by using either the Yoics page or my iPhone, and it even lists my Drobo’s name. But once I click my Drobo’s name to go to it, it never accesses anything. On the Yoics page, it just runs that “Please wait while we connect to the Yoics enabled service. This may take several seconds …” animation forever. Can you provide some insight on what I may be doing wrong?

  3. Tim’s problem was that his Drobo’s name had an apostrophe in it. This is a bug in the web code that will be fixed in the next release. So for now please don’t put any special characters in the alias when you create it.

  4. There are 2 ways to access your drobo via a MAC.

    1) using the web an connecting via http://www.yoics.net

    2) using the MAC desktop.

As for file uploading, yes you can upload files with the MAC desktop, and on the next release
of the web viewer you should be able to upload files via the web as that is under development. The Web viewer works on all platforms. The MAC desktop should work on most MAC platforms, see: http://www.yoics.com/?p=47

  5. Nice start, but I will like to see better security!

    Example:
    1. Be able to select what folder or part of my Drobo I want to have access. Maybe I dont want to have full access to all my folders.
    2. Allow to share specific folder by friends

  6. The security features are scheduled for a later release. Stay tuned.

  7. hello!

can i connect drobo share directly to the internet or does it need a computer running (to which) drobo is connected?

    thanxx chris

  8. The 30min download limit makes this useless for me because of repeated (failed) attempts to download large video files from our server. Will be looking for another solution.

  9. Jason

Sorry to hear about your download issues. If you download the Yoics desktop and connect using that, there is no 30min download limit. Hopefully that is an option to solve your issue.

  10. Unable to access through web browser or iphone, suspect router forwarding issue but haven’t seen any config directions regarding that. Help!

  11. Can you contact via support email or the support board? Please post as much info as possible, like what version of Yoics for Drobo you used, how you are trying to contact Drobo (desktop vs web) and any other info. We’ve had cases of people thinking the Drobo should work with Yoics without even installing the Yoics software on the Drobo, so please be as descriptive as possible.

  12. Hi!
This is what I want to setup:

To be able to view 3 wireless cameras that are behind a wrt300n connected to a cable modem, view them thru the internet.

As I read on the web, I would need to set each camera with a local fixed IP address, do port forwarding on my router and subscribe to a service like TZO.com to access them thru URL name.

Would your software help me achieve this in a different way?

    Thanks.

  13. yes, you can use Yoics to accomplish the same thing – without needing to setup port forwarding. If you are using IP wireless cameras, the you can use the Yoics NOW proxy, to setup each of the cameras as a Yoics accessible device: http://www.yoics.com/?p=21

If you happen to be using IP cameras that support Yoics directly, then you don’t need a computer to run the software on. The camera’s will be Yoics accessible directly.

  14. I’d like to be able to upload and download photos to my drobo / drobo-share over the web when I am traveling without my home computer on. Is it possible with the current release? All the machines on both ends would be Windows (XP or Vista).

    Thanks!

  15. We’ll be introducing an updated “pro” version that will add this and other advanced features.

  16. [...] from Data Robotics, just got an upgrade. Yoics for Drobo is now available as a DroboApp, with Yoics, your Drobo is transformed from a NAS box into your own [...]

  17. I am looking at getting a Drobo. I plan on using it with the hard drive feature on the Airport Express. Will this setup work with Yoics or do I need DroboShare?

  18. Can this YOICS app be used with the Drobo to access Music Files on the iPhone without a computer? If so, what files are supported?

  19. yes, you can just open up your drobo in mobile safari & your mp3 or aac files will play. if you have registered your iPhone with the DRM songs, those will play as well.

  20. Unfortunately to get remote access to your drobo via Yoics, you’ll need to either get a DroboShare – or connect your Drobo to either a Mac or PC with Yoics running on it.

  21. Is there a specific way I can share a single folder from our Droboshare rather than providing someone access to the entire Drobo? We would want them to have a “change” status.

  22. Currently we don’t provide this capability. If the Drobo were connected via USB (rather than the DroboShare) to a PC or Mac and the Yoics desktop were used, you could do this.

  23. I HAVE REGISTERED AND I HAVE REBOOTED BY MY DROBO SHARE AND YOICS DOESNT SEE OR RECOGNIZE IT SO I CANT REGISTER IT. DO I NEED A STATIC IP ADDRESS. I HAVE MY INTERNET TURN OFF EVERY NIGHT SO EACH DAY WHEN IT TURNS ON I HAVE A NEW IP ADDRESS. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO ACCESS MY DROBO VIA DROBO SHARE AND YOICS? HELP HELP I AM LEAVING FOR A TRIP THIS WEEK AND NEED TO REMOTELY ACCESS MY DROBO. THANKS JEFF

  24. I think your products are really great!!! Thanks and keep up the GREAT work!

  25. Hi. I have DROBO and Yoics installed on a computer at my home. I would like my girlfriend to be able to access the photos stored on my drobo from a computer at her house. Can we accomplish this simply with Yoics or do I need to purchase “DroboShare”? Thank you very much.

  26. I have a problem with accessing files. I can only access certain types of files. I can access most images remotely; I can only access office 97-2003 type files; I CANNOT access office 2007 files (docx, etc). Is there a way to access these files? Currently, when I try to dll these files, they come to my comp in Zip files. This is frustrating.

  27. Mitchell

Office 2007 should work, we verified them on our unit. Let us know what error you get.
